Vs FBS competition this season on 2nd and 10 we have done the following.
24 total occurrences
Run 75% of the time for an average of just over 5 yards per carry, but a median of around 3 yards per carry, setting us up for 3rd and long on 13 out of 18 occurrences. We ended up converting a first down on either 2nd or 3rd down 6 out of 18 occurrences.
Pass 25% of the time for an average of 23 yards per play, converting 1st downs on 5 out of 6 occurrences.
By comparison our competition has thrown 54% and run 46% on 2nd and 10. I didn't go through the time to add up their successes
I will say Arod has actually improved this season in this aspect. I remember watching last season at one point we had 11 straight running plays on 2nd and long distance situations. I would guess we ran on 2nd and 8-10 on 80-90% of our plays last season. I believe it was a big reason why our 3rd down conversion rates were abysmal last season. We were constantly in 3rd and 7 or more. I realize our run game was bad and also gaining 0-2 yards on first down is bad, but that's all the more reason to throw the ball more than we have been on 2nd and long situations.
