with many Ute fans. I lived in Bountiful or central Salt Lake County most of my first 18 years. I stopped going to games at the U after having kids made that trek inconvenient after moving to Orem. In my many times at Utah games I saw plenty of people wasted to the point they couldn't walk, but none were rude. That included sitting in the student section many games, wearing Y gear if the Y was playing.
I have had a few Ute cousins and an uncle that go a little overboard occasionally, but it is rare and never toxic. Of the many dozens of avid Ute fans I have worked with, only 1 was a little overboard at times. Still friends with him years later. He was only overboard for the first few weeks. After he realized I wasn't returning toxicity he was pleasant the rest of the time.
The people I lived by in Millcreek were 100% Ute fans, but as others have pointed out, those were professionals, so less likely to be toxic. Co-workers have been the full range from professional to hourly. All good experiences. Generally fun to talk about the rivalry, good natured razzing depending on who won, etc. Guess I've lived a charmed life too.
The only time I remember issues is walking out of the Ute stadium once a few fans were jerks. I have Y stickers on my cars, spend time in Salt Lake City and County regularly and have never had issues.
