Almost always the carburetor gumming up. Clean out the venturi with a bread tie
and carburetor cleaner. Always my go to for fixing small engines. Peal the paper off the bread tie and use the fine metal to clean it out.

Checked the gas cap? I've had my gas caps go bad twice and cause vapor lock. What you said is the symptom.
