I missed your post yesterday but I have to say that I agree with some of what you are saying. I think that it can be foolish to make a big deal out how stupid it is do spend a lot of money on clothes and cars. In some jobs, like sales positions, or professional positions where you are basically selling yourself, it doesn't matter that YOU consider it a silly thing to spend money on. It is far more important what clients and bosses think about it. I don't dress extravagently by any means... but dressing in the uniform of business (i.e. a respectable suit) is just a cost of doing business in many jobs. If you are an attorney or a consultant, I honestly believe that people will be more comfortable paying your high hourly rates if you are dressed nice. It can also have an impact on promotions or just how your boss and co-workers see you. I think trying to be TOO cheap can be penny wise and pound foolish. But that is just me. And there is a good chance that what I consider an acceptable suit might not meet the standards of NYC finance... but once again you have to wear the uniform whatever it might be where you want to work.
