His response to their response is exactly why they respond like that. Unfortunately, there
are a lot of people who will think the same thing that the OP thought - it would just be easier to fix this myself than to jump through their hoops.
IMO you need to so something to get their attention. It shouldn't be your burden to get them to pay for the damages they caused.
