The standards and expectations have moved for this program in a very short period.
The old standard:
Bad season - No post season invite (usually 18 or fewer wins in WAC/MWC/WCC)
Meh season - NIT invite (that we always accepted)
Good Season - NCAA Bid (first round exit)
Great Season - Any NCAA Win (exit by the second round)
Special Season - Sweet Sixteen or better
The new standard:
Bad Season - Losing record in B12 conference & NIT invite (likely declined to focus on portal and next year)
Meh season - Losing record in B12 conference & NCAA Bid (first round/play-in exit)
Good season - T6 in B12 conference & an NCAA Win or two
Great Season - T4 in B12 & 3 NCAA wins (Elite 8)
Special Season - T2 in B12 & 4+ NCAA wins (Final Four team)
Being in the B12, hiring KY, and being able to fund great recruits through NIL without engaging in any shady practices have all dramatically changed the face of BYU basketball and it's basically happened overnight. We were playing in the WCC with no tournament victories in over a decade just two years ago and the idea of bringing in even a top ten pick that wasn't a member of the faith was inconceivable. A lot has changed in a very good way for BYU these last two years and, while we can't see the future, I don't see any reason why it won't be sustainable going forward. It's a great time to be a fan of this program.
