So you have one switch controlling the light and the fan?
And when you say the only switch on the fan is the directional one, aren’t there hanging chains to individually control the fan and light?

The remote has buttons for the fan and a separate one for the lights. No chains hanging to control any of it.

Correct. The only way to control the light is either with the remote or the wall switch. And the wall switch turns

You can get a new remote kit for ~$15.. but if you are going to take your fan apart/down to do that..
