I also agree he did some great things. My problem is he isn't hitting some critical benchmarks and has blown it when ball security is critical. Sometimes you have to turn off the swashbuckling.
My view is that the offense got bailed out a lot by the defense and special teams. Running back by commitee was part of the problem but Retzlaff was also part of the problem. His completion percentage needs to go up and ball security when it matters most must be improved. Retzlaffs shortfalls are compounded because we had a very good receiving corps.
BYU's offense needs three things to stay near the top of the conference next season:
1. Jake has to improve.
2. We need to find a running back (preferably two) that stays healthy and is pushing the hundred yards a game benchmark. It's possible that running back is currently on the team but we should be on the lookout.
3. Do a better job incorporating the tight end into the passing game. What was once a strength for BYU is now a weakness. Unfortunate because tight ends can do a lot to soften up the defensive secondary making things even easier for the receivers/QB. If a defense knows the tight end is merely in there to block the safeties can spend less time worrying about them and spend more time helping on the receivers. This also puts the inside backers into the middle zone which clogs up throwing lanes. Making the tight end a key element of the offense should also help Retzlaffs completion percentage. I think Roderick did a good job last season but this one is on him to improve. When guys like Holker and Rex are waisting away it's not a good thing. We need to use all of our weapons.
BYU has to try and find a QB to push Retlaff or beat him. We played down to the level of our competition too much and couldn't put points on the board. Consistent QB play was part of the problem.
