Colorado football programs. Those are three schools that naturally will pursue the same types of recruits.
Utah has had a lot of success in luring non LDS kids who aren't from the state of Utah to SLC to ball for Whit. As he now falters into his last year or two with the program, ASU and Colorado both return to relevance - fewer and fewer of those kids from CA and TX and other places are going to choose Utah.
And at the same time, with BYU now on equal footing with Utah, fewer and fewer LDS Utah kids are going to choose Utah.
Obviously tons of TBD variables in all of this - but if Utah doesn't bounce back big next year, the slide into their natural state of mediocrity is going to accelerate.
In the pre-Urban landscape, ASU and Colorado were both FAR better and more nationally relevant football programs than Utah (as was Arizona, though they're in a bad spot at the moment). As we head into the post-KWhitt landscape, I predict that natural order will re-emerge.
Let's check back in five years to see if I was right.
