brings a tear.
Not sure what you've read or haven't read. If Balto is a hero, feel free to click out of this post.
The Serum Run was amazing. Was it as amazing as the accounts afterwards? Probably not. The story received the Hollywood treatment almost immediately. Decent chance that Balto was never even a lead dog but chosen to be the celebrity simply because he had a more marketable name.
Togo was a well known lead dog, had won several races, and did indeed lead the biggest chunk of work on the Serum Run. The legend of Togo is well earned not only thru the Serum Run, but his many race wins and other incredible feats. His bloodline is still sought after today.
The majority of the run was done by natives, but reporters, either from disinterest or language barrier, never captured their stories.
Seppala was not quite the humble introvert as portrayed in the film. He owned both Togo and Balto, and employed Kaasen, the final musher who toured with Balto afterward. But while Kaasen was touring with Balto, Seppala was touring with Togo in an effort to drive up Togo's worth. After touring, Togo was retired to Maine where he would sire many litters of pups.
The Serum Run was the best thing that ever happened to Seppala's sled dog breeding business.
