And I get it. He did make some bad decisions at times. But we need to keep things in perspective. His improvement from last year to this year has been significant. He won some games for us. The final drives to win against Oklahoma State and Utah were largely because of Jake. He made some spectacular plays with his arm and his feet.
He also had to play a very tough schedule. Ty Detmer, as great as he was, struggled from time to time against P4 teams. So did other BYU greats.
Football has also changed a lot since the BYU glory days. You can’t just pass to beat teams nowadays. You can’t be one dimensional against fast, physical defenses. You have to be able to pass and run. Quarterbacks today are not going to have the same lofty passing stats as QBs from the glory years. We are playing against much better defenses.
Jake is a natural born leader. I am glad he is our quarterback. I expect to see another major step up for him next year. The main improvement we will see will be his decision making in the red zone.
