As Krindorr said, having division winners go to the NFL works because all divisions in the NFL are equal. They get all
the same resources - salary cap and draft picks. On top of that, they all get the same share of league revenue. So a team from the AFC West has the exact same chance as a team from the NFC East.
You don’t have that in college football. The SEC is better than the Mountain West. The Big 10 is better than the MAC. The Big 12 is better than the Sun Belt. And teams in bigger conferences have access to way more money and resources. It isn’t equal.
So your playoffs don’t have the 12 best teams. And that makes an awful product.
