The CFA was only formed in the 70s. The split was in 1978. The NCAA TV
monopoly ended in 1984, which is why BYU v Pitt was ESPN's first ever college football broadcast.
In the 80s, independents won most of the national champions, with most of the rest being "outsiders". 6 champions were independent. 1 WAC, 1 Big 8., 1 ACC, no PAC, 1 SEC, no Big Ten.
The Big Ten didn't win a single one between 1968 and the split in 1997.
In short, the WAC had more national titles than the Big 10 and PAC 10 combined in the 80s.
