The gaps and lines were absolutely not the same in the 80s and 90s - consider:
we beat a #4 Air Force team in 1985 - yes, Air Force was the #4 team in the country. We were their only loss in a 12-1 season in which they beat Notre Dame.
The constraints of the BCS had not yet started funneling ALL of the top talent to select teams. An AFA, or Wyoming, or Colorado State could surge into the top ten.
Different dynamic. So us being called out for playing "Bo Didley Tech" in the 1980s wasn't the same critique as correctly noting that BSU today plays two tough games a year and otherwise nobody.
