Learning skills and developing competency. Learning how to do new things, even menial things, is fulfilling and will help you feel more confident and less anxious about living in this crazy world. A fulfilling life isn't just life being constantly entertained.
One of my favorite young men's activities that I still carry with me to this day was when I had to learn a bunch of knots and then teach those knots to the other scouts. At the time I thought it was going to be a drag, but I actually ended up enjoying it, especially when I taught the rest of the scouts.
I don't remember all of my knots anymore, but there are still 2 or 3 that I find myself using. Everytime I do I feel a lot of satisfaction.
I wonder how much of youth anxiety today is simply kids not feeling prepared or feeling competent because they have not been given enough expectations and opportunities to learn skills, grow, develop competency, and gain the corresponding confidence that comes with it.
