However, it is his inability to secure top talent, especially top LDS talent and honestly, after hearing many stories like this tweet below, I’m beginning to believe he may just not be good at even spotting it.
Case in point— the SEC (via Oklahoma) is cherry picking a Lehi QB in BYU’s own backyard… and apparently Arod was either too good to offer him or whiffed on scouting this now future SEC QB. (And let’s not forget he also whiffed on another now SEC-bound QB named Helaman.)
Jake Murphy (former BYU and Utah TE and son of Dale Murphy, who’s baffled that neither program offered Jett Niu) tweeted this out earlier today and appears to know the Niu family and said that BYU (Arod) “big timed him” early on in the recruiting process:
