kind of mirroring how we all felt. The win v. Houston was good (not great, because we played rather poorly and uninspired), but the fact that BYU let some very winnable games slip through their fingers by key lapses and lack of focus (KS's description) really hurts.
I am thrilled that BYU is bowl-eligible. But, expectations changed when it was 9-0 and ranked No. 6. Then, with a national playoff spot in its grasp, BYU just kind of melted two weeks in a row. It could not play a complete game. Even last night's win was a bit disappointing with the silly unforced errors in the red zone (including Jake's fumble of a snap).
Kalani said last night that BYU had been lacking focus for the past three weeks (since the Utah game). He even blamed errors last night on lack of focus - with players upset upon learning that Iowa State beat KSU, closing the door on BYU getting a spot in the CCG.
I now wonder if the lack of focus via disappointment will bleed into bowl season. What kind of BYU team will we see in a bowl game? A spirited team with something to prove or a sleepwalking team going through the motions?
I'm happy about the season. It was way beyond expectations. I just hate to see BYU lose games by sleeping through 50% of the game or just by playing dumb football. (The play calling at the end of the Kansas game comes to mind.)
We all realize that BYU was not going to win every game. But, it did so well that our hopes and expectations changed. So, when things did not come together, everyone involved was very disappointed - players included. Hopefully, they will come out on fire in the bowl game and end the season 11-2.
