at critical times have cost us dearly. Exhibit A and B were very similar situations, the pick six against OU last year and the INT before the half against Kansas.
Both times were NO BRAINER run situations. Under no circumstances should we have passed on those plays. And yes I get that the one against OU was an RPO, but that’s on Arod for putting a young QB in a situation where he could make a really bad decision when we were gashing them on the ground that drive.
The call against Kansas was an all-time awful play. 1st down inside the 5, 40 seconds, and 2 timeouts. You run the ball AT LEAST twice to try and pound it in and also potentially milk the clock a bit more. But no, instead you rush to the line and throw the worst pass in football with a QB who hasn’t shown an ability to make that throw accurately. Zero excuses whatsoever for that play call. My 10 year old daughter who has just been learning more about football this year would have known to run the ball there.
That inexcusable decision made the difference between BYU going 11-1 and very likely making the CFP (even as an at-large) and being 10-2 and not only missing the playoffs but not even getting into the CCG.
If you eliminate the moments where Arod appears that he used a random play generator to pick a play call that doesn’t fit the situation whatsoever, he’s a really solid OC who is good at developing QBs.
