and they didn't.
There was a lot to hate (first half) and a lot to like (most of the second half) about BYU's game on Saturday but there is no excuse for coming out the way they did on both sides of the ball. That's 100% on the coaches to have the team ready to execute, to have plan in place for their team to have success, and to put the players in a position to have that success. I'm not sure what the plan was coming in but getting down 21 - 0 is inexcusable in a game like this.
Jake is a 50/50 proposition. Sometimes he'll make the play, sometimes he won't. But, when he doesn't, it ends up being disastrous way more often than just an incompletion or missed throw. He could have easily had 3 or 4 picks on Saturday. He also could have had 2 or 3 more touchdowns. It seems Kalani wants to play Utah-style football by beating other teams with the defense and just managing the game on offense but his defense isn't strong enough for that, and Jake isn't even up to the level of game manager. He's too inaccurate and too inconsistent for that.
As for the lack of possessions...that's BYU's fault. D didn't adjust quickly enough. They were often playing one or two safeties 15 yards off the line of scrimmage on what were obvious running downs. Easy conversions for ASU. The offense continued to slow play things even at the start of the second half. It's maddening to watch but I guess the coaches have their reasons.
In the end, it's hard to look at the last two weeks and come away with any other conclusion than the coaches did not have the team prepared for either game. You can talk about execution in-game all you want but that's the coaches job to get them prepared and have plans in place to make things happen in the game.
