You’re right. Playing football in college is fully voluntary. They are also paid to do so.
I guess the question is are they being paid to treat this like they’re in it for a participation trophy, or are they being paid to win?
Maybe it doesn’t matter to you. But it matters to big time donors, season ticket holders and fans who fork over $500 for their family to go see a game every now and then. You know, the money that is used to pay the players. Welcome to modern college sports. It’s a business. The students are employees who are paid to perform.
