My father-in-law and I don’t get to spend much time together. We live on opposite ends of the country and my wife had a complicated relationship with her mom.
Fishing and BYU football are two of our joint passions.
We have a ton in common. He came out for a visit to the east Coast the weekend of the OkieSt game. That Saturday morning we both caught trophy bull redfish on the beach in Hilton Head.
We ended the day yelling at 2am for the cougars.
My father is in the middle stages of mental decline. He took me to games to see Giff Nielsen and the line of BYU QBs play. We rarely missed a game all the way thru the 84 season.
We were at the 84 Natty Holiday bowl.
The next year I was a freshman at BYU.
I’ve been in Utah this week staying with them mostly to help arrange things with my mom as my dad loses capability.
I don’t think he’ll be aware of another BYU season.
A big part of my visit was a party for the BYU game. Many of the family came over for smoked meats and good food.
But most have young kids so by the end of the game it was just me and my dad watching.
It was so great that the last game we may have together was that one.
And it’s awesome we get to share this fantastic season.
Sometimes I have to remind him Sunday morning who won Saturday night.
These last memories are so precious and so glad BYU football is giving us great season.
