and learn how to bend and hinge at the hip and back...
A couple years ago I dealt with a nearly year long back issue... and throughout PT I realized I was never bending correctly. Years of sports and never had a coach point it out.

As long as his form is correct and you make sure he isn't ego lifting, it's fine

Lighter weight yes but I wouldn’t do any exercises that load the spine at that age.

Came to say this. My boys lift, but no Squats or DL's just yet.

I told my kids bodyweight first. Once they show good form and habits on squats, push ups, dips etc
