I told my kids bodyweight first. Once they show good form and habits on squats, push ups, dips etc
with bodyweight we may consider adding weight, but they must have proper form first.

As long as his form is correct and you make sure he isn't ego lifting, it's fine

Lighter weight yes but I wouldn’t do any exercises that load the spine at that age.
