What shocks me the most is that the police cannot do anything if the perp
doesn't come to the door?

I guess it's his word only, without any other witnesses (cameras), but this still shocks me.

When I was 18, I was working night desk clerk at a motel in Medina, Ohio, along I-71. A guest called and asked for a pot of coffee. Back then, we'd do that kind of thing. I'm the only employee working. We had about 36 rooms on 2 floors.

I took up the pot of coffee and the guy opened the door. I went and sat the hot pot on a coaster on his dresser. When I turned around the guy was all-hands on me and attempting to pull my shirt out of my pants. I, with a lot of force (I was 6' 170 lbs), knocked the guy upside of the wall and ran out the door. The guy didn't follow me. When I was back in the office, I called 911. I had 5 county deputies there within minutes. They went to the guy and since he seemed peaceful, but intoxicated, but they couldn't arrest him. My word against his. From that day on, I carried a 38 on my belt at night and carrying a weapon in public, without a permit, wasn't legal in Ohio, but the guy plum scared the pickles out of me. As I said, I was bigger than the guy, but just to be assaulted like that did a number on me.
