I agree with that part, but the first round is Dec 19. Most of the good bowl games are Dec 28 or later.
Rather than giving those bowl games to lesser teams, take a couple of them and make them consolation games for the first round losers.
The pop tart bowl or the holiday bowl would be great.
Every non-playoff bowl is already a consolation game. Might as well give a consolation game to the best teams.
