We had this problem and went about fixing it by creating a slack canvas that gets generated every morning with team tasks and updates and people have to fill in their progress on what they're doing.

This really serves two purposes:

1) keep people accountable for what they're working on and ensure progress is being made
2) keep context for everyone involved around the things that matter most to us as a team so that if anyone is gone the work can progress
