They were never going to be able to match other conferences after loss of LA
They needed to at least match or beat the big 12. They needed to try to be competitive with the B1G. Once they lost LA, that was impossible. And that meant that other teams were going to get poached, which is exactly what happened.
So I disagree with your statement. I think it was the death blow to the conference.
