Retzlaff now 3-0 as a starter, with two of them road games vs teams that REALLY
wanted revenge on BYU for years of frustration - that means something typically.

JR's 3 game Stats: 57/94 = 61% passing completion %
841 yards = 286 passing ypg (not bad),
8.9 yard average (that's a lot of 1st downs),
7/3 TD/INT ratio,
Rushing 24 for 113 yrds = 4.71 ypc - although he'd be 6.2 ypc if the refs didn't take away his 40 yarder today for a phantom hold.

For comparison, Ty Detmer for his career was:
62.6% passing completion %,
313 ypg,
9.8 yard average,
7.6 / 4.1 TD/INT average ratio for each average 3 games (121 / 65 over 48 games)

However, Detmer didn't sniff those numbers as a freshman new starter in 1988. His 1988 Freshman #'s over 10 games (6-4 win/loss) were a lot worse,
54.2% passing completion %,
125 ypg,
8.2 yard average,
13/10 TD/INT ratio

But Detmer's rushing was -1.4 ypc for his career (not so good with all those sacks).

And yet, Detmer won the Heisman

That's not to say that Reztaff is Ty Detmer at all, as there's a lot of water to flow under the bridge before that. But just that JR is not so far off that he deserves the frequent calls by some on CB to bench him, that he's terrible, and who conclude that he'll never amount to a Div. 1 QB.

Now of course, I've been a JR supporter (as I would be if GB was QB1), or mainly just vocal about those who try to maligne Jake on CB.

But I also acknowledge that he is absolutely "HIGH RISK / HIGH REWARD" and likely always will be, as that's his style. Even vs Wyo, with the entire body of work being pretty nice numbers and a win in hostile territory, I acknowledge that he left some points on the board unclaimed. There were some throws that were off target, and some where I was thinking to myself, "dang, he really should have hit that guy, or placed it better. But, as with previous games, there were also some passes that were downright amazing, and decisions (some of the runs) where he was also amazing. So, he does both. That's the thing.

But there is one huge key to JR, IMO, that bodes well. When he makes big mistakes, or has a big miss, he does not do what many QB's do, get gun-shy, tentative, and lose confidence. He gets right back up on the horse, and goes back to being a leader. And because of that character trait, I believe that if given enough time and experience, that JR's "HIGH RISK / HIGH REWARD" will gradually become more HIGH REWARD, and less and less HIGH RISK over time.
