Being in the insurance industry
I would suggest getting an older car and not putting any collision or comprehensive coverage on it. Depending on the household, adding those two coverages could end up cost you about 2-4K per year. Every one of my kids got beater cars to start with. Luckily not one accident, so I ended up saving probably close to 10K in insurance premiums. Step daughter got a brand new car. It has so been wrecked so many times I can't remember. We've paid about 10K in the last three years for collision and comp coverage on that stupid thing.
