BYU knelt the ball with 18 seconds left in the 4th quarter. The scoreboard...

...showed it was then 4th down, with 16 seconds left.

SMU had a timeout left.

If SMU calls a timeout, BYU punts the ball back to SMU with 16 seconds left.

What am I missing here? Was the ESPN clock wrong. The down was correct. Or is the SMU coach really that dumb?
