NIL changed/became safer for BYU and Pope leaving scared some people into seeing
we needed to pony up to compete. Contrary to some other answers to your questions, I don’t think it’s an indictment of Mark Pope or what donors thought of him.
Up until this year, BYU really pushed spreading NIL among all players on a team equally. BYU is now more receptive to spending more money and spending a lot on individual players.
