They were expected to save during their teenage years - enough for first year tuition. Then they got summer jobs and maybe part-time jobs during school to earn their money. If they got married - the plan flipped: We paid tuition for bachelors. They paid room and board.
By doing this all our kids got through BYU debt free. It was also incentive for them to go to BYU/BYU-I given that tuition was so much cheaper. This offer was only good for a bachelors degree. Masters - they were on their own.
