If you don't stay on top of them, they will get something wrong. Also,
changes later cost a lot more than changes early. Decid on design and everything early and stick to it.
Lastly, if you can get certain parts lump sum (probably don't have the leverage to do so) that can help mitigate over-run.

In regards to technology changes, definitely put CAT6 rather than CAT5 in.
