I've been helping my mom sort through all of the financial stuff. It's hard to make money on a farm. Minus a few really good years, I don't think it made them much money. My parents were primarily supported by the construction work my dad did.
Pretty much every farmer where I grew up has something they do on the "side", despite having pretty large farms. I don't think you'd see that if it was viable to just farm. Maybe it's different in other areas.
I get it though. I'll occasionally get hit with some nostalgia when visiting my mom. I'll also agree that it's easier to teach your kids how to work on a farm. But then I remember that I didn't love the work when I was a kid and I'm happy to not be living in a small town. I also like my job and make a lot more money than I would as a farmer. So the nostalgia doesn't last long.
