You are right in so many ways. I grew up in the suburbs of
Utah and if it wasn't for a job opportunity that took me out of State, I would not have gained the same perspective. While we don't own a commercial farm, we do have 10 acres now and have smaller farming responsibilities. I still work my office job and basically farm in my spare time. It has been amazing and reconnected me and the family with the land. It's very satisficing and it has given my family a very different perspective that they would not have gained otherwise.

If I had to choose, I would chose farming over the suburban office life. It's hard to explain to people that don't work the land, it changes you in a good way and it's so good for kids. My great Grand father was an immigrant from Switzerland. Him and his wife settled in Logan and than later bought a a large dry farm in Idaho.

My grand father and my dad both grew up working the farm. I wish my Great Grandfather was still around so I could glean from him. He would hay his fields using horses and wagons with very little mechanized equipment. They did this until Tractors became more available and affordable. He would be amazed at the farm land here where I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. It's some of the most productive land in the country and so beautiful.
