Pau Gasol syndrome
When I lived in Los Angeles, I noticed an irrational dislike of Pau Gasol.

By that time Kobe Bryant had largely turned into a low efficiency chucker - he shot 43% in 2011-12. But he was still Kobe and had god-like status on the area. So whenever the Lakers won, it was a reflection of Kobe. And whenever they lost, it must have been someone else's fault...i.e. Pau Gasol. Which led to Pau Gasol getting a weirdly negative undeserved reputation among the fanbase.

Same thing happens with BYU; we choose a golden boy and a scapegoat and enforce those roles without regard for actual reality.

For a long time Tuiaki was the (largely) deserved scapegoat...which meant Roderick escaped any blame. Consider the Coastal Carolina game, where the offense completely cratered and everyone here ... blamed the defense for not letting the offense get in enough rhythm (nevermind that the repeated offensive 3 and outs had more to do with the ToP disparity than any defensive issues).

But now Jay Hill came in. And we want so so badly to believe that he's the answer that we've anointed him the golden child. And he might be. But last season the defense was still bad. We had the lowest sack rate of any FBS school. But because no blame was allowed to be placed on defense, everything is now being pushed onto Roderick as the root of every issue.

That's not to say the offense was good under Roderick last year (and certainly not to say Tuiaki did well as DC), but to point out that they received all the criticism due to them...and also some that wasn't
