I recently took an executive role at a series B software startup and found I had to dress down. It was a nice change. Almost nobody wears a shirt with a collar. The CEO is always in a company-branded t-shirt.

This should be the norm in my opinion. Function over form, and comfort should always trump everything (except for weddings and funerals).
