I think most CBers are discounting how good the rest of the other teams are
going to be this year. They are likely using this last season as a reference where the Big 12 only had 2 teams in the top 10 and 4 teams in the top 20 in KenPom (and BYU was #4).

The logic is something like "BYU was #4 in KenPom last season, and we are bringing in a couple of top-tier recruits so we should definitely be top 4 again."

While that logic may seem reasonable on the surface, one has to look at how much better other teams are looking as well. It's very possible that the Big 12 ends up with 5 Top-10 teams next season (Kansas, Houston, Iowa St., Baylor, Arizona). Aaron Torres' current preseason rankings have BYU as a top-20 team but still only #7 in the conference. So while BYU's team may be BETTER next season, they could very well be better but also finish LOWER in the conference standings - simply because of how ridiculously deep the conference will be next season.
