The Black Hills is a really underrated part of the country. Very pretty.

We spent a few days there and really enjoyed it. I don't know about the drive to West Yellowstone, but if the question is whether you should visit the Black Hills area where Mt. Rushmore is located, I would recommend it. Lots of hiking and outdoorsy activities.

We enjoyed seeing Devil's Tower as much or more than Mt Rushmore. Also, hiked through Jewel Cave. Stayed in Deadwood.
