The twins come from a group of witches who fled the Republic because the Jedi believed them to be practicing the dark side of the force. (This remains to be seen if true or not). They are an all-female group and two of them (a lesbian couple) somehow manipulated the force into placing a child inside one of them. It seems to be hinted that this was an aberration of the force.
