It depends on the situation: If they are close to exfoliating, probably not. But if the cavities are on the side of the
baby tooth right next to the permanent teeth (which is probably the case since he's 12ish), they may need treatment if they aren't falling out soon. The xrays will show roughly how much time until the permanent teeth push out the baby teeth. Sometimes, all you need to do is floss a little SDF between those teeth and prescribe 1.1% fluoride toothpaste and watch them for six months. However, if your son has poor hygiene and a high sugar diet, that may not be a good idea. So many things to consider when diagnosing cavities and deciding on tx.
