I've learned a long time ago in business that if someone is looking at making a move, staying has to be done for the right reasons. People need to be fully invested in the team, and sometimes it's better to team culture to lose a highly skilled individual whose heart isn't fully in staying and has a self-driven sense of accountability toward the team. Good leaders will get to the bottom of concerns prior to people wanting to leave the team not after they have already made the decision, but there are also people who will never be truly happy in a team setting or a specific culture, and that's ok.

This team clearly had some personal/team accountability issues and some cultural problems. The retention and recruiting strategies need to focus on getting the right people for the team first and foremost, and that means some skilled players (and coaches) may need to leave. A highly-functional team with lesser talent will out-compete talent alone. That should be BYU's mantra.
