they had just gotten an electronic stethoscope to listen for baby heartbeats.
So he wasn’t very familiar with the new device and was listening for the heartbeat and kept moving it around trying to hear it. Mom could probably tell that he wasn’t detecting anything as he kept moving it. She was probably getting nervous.
Finally he tapped the receiver and realized it wasn’t getting power, and that’s why he wasn’t hearing anything. But the words he unfortunately used to explain this were:
“Oh… it’s dead.”
The mom let out a shriek/wail that surprised my dad for just a second until he realized the obvious inference she would take from the phrase he chose. 🤦🏼♂️ Then explained that he meant the device and he’s sure the baby is fine.
