So yes, a team that starts the season in the top 10, and of course more importantly plays up to that often meaningless pre-season ranking, is in contention for the CFP, especially if they win their conference. That's the very definition of possible contender, or "maybe". That's quite a bit different than saying "we'll be in the CFP right alongside AL or GA or tOSU or Clemson, etc." 2 or 3 of those regulars are pretty much locks every year. The other 1-2 spots are taken up by the other contenders, like ND, MI, OK, OR, WA, Cincy, etc. So yes, Utah is a possible contender this year, but a LONG ways from a sure thing.
