As a Vet said to me, standard poodles are a way underutilized breed for a family
dog, and having had primarily labs in addition to standards, I couldn't agree more. Much more mellow that smaller versions but extremely bright, trainable, people oriented, etc.
Borders are so smart but are so energetic and needy of interaction that they don't make great pets for most people. They need to work and have a job to apply the intensity they are bred with.
