Little dive motel in Kadoka, SD. Literally nothing open for about 100 miles either way, so we stopped at a dive of a
place close to midnight that had a broken down swing set, an empty pool, and the neon vacancy sign literally had only about 3 working letters. It had weeds growing in the parking lot, the door had like three sliding locks, the old guy at the check-in had no teeth. Abandoned gas station next door. Felt like it was straight out of a horror movie. But it was that or sleep in our van or risk falling asleep if we kept driving and going off the highway with no one around for an hour either way.
I don't think I ended up closing my eyes for more than 5 minutes at a time that night. Every time the wind rattled the door or some new smell came around, I was wide awake. We left as soon as the sun came up.
