I know they cite it, but it screams of a retcon they're applying after the fact more than a serious constraint they wouldn't abandon the second an attractive university came along that lacked that criteria. Washington State and UA are in the conference, for heaven's sake, it's not an elite academic club.

To your last point, there's no way BYU wouldn't take home significantly more money in any P5 conference than they do as an independent.
