In 2016 Traeger filed for service patents on:
* Cloud system for controlling outdoor grill with mobile application
* Mobile application for controlling outdoor grill
Note: At the time, there were already grills that had WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
In 2018 Traeger sent a 'cease and desist' to Green Mountain, Rec-Tec, and Memphis Grills. Soon after, Green Mountain Grills (GMG) filed a suit against Traeger in the US Patent and Trademark Office, asking for the invalidation of these patents.
In November 2020 Traeger filed a lawsuit against Green Mountain Grills for patent infringement in the Federal District Court of Nevada.
Why GMG? because they are the little guy. Traeger is basically trying to kill GMG... and if they win they'll have precedence to go after every other manufacture and demand restitution for their 'infringements'.
