Utah, somehow, supports 3 FBS programs. I've always been fascinated by this, and decided to look it up. Haven't run the numbers yet, but does Utah have more D1 football schools per capita than any other state? Prob not, Wyoming's population is so small, for example. But still.
Look at the 9 states closest to Utah in population. Only one, Oklahoma, which has a larger population, also supports 3 top level football programs.
Here's a scoring chart. I gave 1 point for each traditional D1 school, .5 points for each fake D1 school (a small school traditionally D2 or whatever, like UNR).
KY = 2.5
OR = 2
CT = 1
OK = 3
IA = 2
NV = 1.5
AR = 1.5
MS = 2.5
KS = 2
In my mind, this is crazy - or at least eye opening. MS is in the heart of SEC country, and OK borders Texas. To put it another way, Utah has more top level football schools than many states that have much larger populations, like CO, MN, AZ, WA, WI and likely more. Edit: this is leaving out AFA, as it's not a state regional school but a federal institution.
So I don't know if the increased in-state competition hurts BYU or not, maybe not since the state produces an oddly high number of D1 recruits, but it's fascinating that Utah is such a football hotbed in an island of states that don't really care about it. For what it's worth, it's a more similar environment to parts of the SEC footprint than it is to the surrounding mountain west region.
