I didn't realize how bad it was until I got out of the theater, also.
I even semi-enjoyed it the first go around. I didn't start getting angry at the movie until I thought about it for a while.
When Luke did his distance-force-image thing, that was AWESOME in theaters. When I left, and thought about it, I was incredibly upset.
So yeah. Critics liked it. Audiences might have even liked the shock value initially. But it wrecked the story of Luke, gave us characters we don't care about, when ALL TLJ had to do was transfer Luke to Rey. We would have cared about Rey in a heartbeat.
